How marriage has morphed into a means of supporting intensive investments in children

first_img“In a gender-specialized economy, where men and women are playing very different productive roles, you need the long-term commitment to protect the vulnerable party, who in this case is the woman,” explained Lundberg, UCSB’s Leonard Broom Professor of Demography. “But when women’s educational attainment increased and surpassed that of men, and women became more committed to jobs and careers, the kind of economic disparity that supported a division of labor in the household eroded.”If this scenario is true for people across the economic spectrum, Lundberg posited, then statistics should show a broad-based retreat from marriage. Evidence, however, bears out something entirely different.“What we see is a striking adherence to traditional marriage patterns among the college educated and those with higher professional degrees,” Lundberg said. “While marriage rates have declined consistently over time, they have declined far more among people whose education level is high school or some college.”Also, college graduates tend to marry before they begin families and, when they do wed, their marriages are more stable than those of couples with less education. This puzzled Lundberg and Pollak. The researchers hypothesized that now — in the 21st century — a primary function of marriage is to provide a long-term stable home for children, which suggests that investments in offspring have become a driving force in preserving the institution of matrimony. Lundberg noted that mothers at all economic levels spend more time with their children now than was common 30 years ago.“In terms of time and money, the well-educated, higher-income parents have increased their investments in children much more than those with lower incomes,” Lundberg said. “They have the know-how and the resources and they expect to help their children become economically successful in a way that may seem out of reach for parents with much lower levels of resources.”According to Lundberg, the playing field is not level and the focus for low-income parents is on keeping their children safe and healthy. “When the joint project of intense investments in children seems out of reach, it may not seem worth putting up with the disadvantages of marriage,” Lundberg said.“One possible implication if we are right — and I should say that this is a speculative argument — is that it may be possible to encourage investing in children among lower-income parents by devoting more social resources to early childhood, enabling parents to see a brighter future for their children,” Lundberg added. “These societal investments could, in turn, make longer-term commitments among these parents more feasible and advantageous.”One aspect of marriage that hasn’t changed much over the years is that most men and women eventually do marry. “If you look at the fraction of people 50 years old who have ever married, the differences between the education groups are very, very small,” Lundberg said. “What is really distinctive is the timing of marriage and the very high proportion of women with a high school diploma or some college who have their first child either on their own or within a cohabitating relationship, which is extremely rare among people with a college degree or higher.“The timing is extraordinarily suggestive,” Lundberg concluded. “Almost everyone wants to get married eventually. The question is when, and do you wait until you get married before you have a child?” Share on Facebook Share Share on Twitter Emailcenter_img Pinterest Marriage as an institution is not what it used to be. Since the 1950s, the number of couple exchanging “I dos” has dropped steadily. And while most Americans do marry at some point in their lives, many are choosing to do so later.A new study by UC Santa Barbara demographer Shelly Lundberg and economist Robert Pollak of Washington University in St. Louis examines Americans’ changing sensibilities about marriage, using economics as a measuring tool. Lundberg and Pollak contend that families with high incomes and high levels of education have the greatest incentives to maintain long-term relationships. Their findings appear in the journal The Future of Children. The researchers argue that, since the mid-20th century, marriage has morphed from an institution based on gender specialization — the man earns the income and the woman stays home to take care of the children — to a means of supporting intensive investment in children. BOEM to offer 44M acres in Central GoM lease sale

first_imgBureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) Acting Director Walter Cruickshank has announced that the bureau will offer nearly 44 million acres offshore Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama for oil and gas exploration and development in a sale that will include all available unleased areas in the Central Gulf of Mexico Planning Area.Proposed Central Gulf of Mexico Lease Sale 235, scheduled to take place in New Orleans, Louisiana, in March of 2015, will be the seventh offshore sale under the Administration’s Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program for 2012-2017 (Five Year Program). This sale builds on the first six sales in the current Five Year Program, which have offered more than 60 million acres and netted $2.4 billion for American taxpayers.“As one of the most productive basins in the world, the Gulf of Mexico is a cornerstone of our domestic energy portfolio, offering vital oil and gas resources that further economic growth and continue to reduce our dependence on foreign oil,” said Walter Cruickshank.“This lease sale is another important step in promoting responsible domestic energy production through the safe, environmentally sound development of the Nation’s offshore energy resources, while ensuring a fair return to the American people.”Sale 235 will include approximately 7,477 blocks, covering 43.5 million acres, located from three to 230 nautical miles offshore, in water depths ranging from nine to more than 11,000 feet (three to 3,400 meters). BOEM plans to offer blocks located, or partially located, within the three statute mile U.S. – Mexico Boundary Area subject to the terms of the U.S. – Mexico Transboundary Hydrocarbon Agreement. BOEM estimates the proposed lease sale could result in the production of 460 to 894 million barrels of oil and 1.9 to 3.9 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.Press Release[mappress mapid=”242″]last_img read more

first_imgThe creators of the Y2K turbine-powered motorcycle is back with a bigger project which has been dubbed the MTT 420RR.Using a Rolls Royce Allison – 250-C20 Series Gas Turbine engine, Marine Turbine Technologies is planning for their upcoming MTT 420RR to produce 420hp and 810Nm of torque! No news on when the bike will be officially introduced but with the specs stated by MTT, it’ll probably be the fastest road-going production motorcycle of all time. The creators of the super manic turbine-powered Y2K superbike are back with a bigger and more “off the charts CRAZY” project. Like most manufacturers, they too felt that they can and should do better than their previous 320hp turbine-powered Y2K superbike which was built back in 2000.Just when you thought that having around 200hp on the standard road-going superbikes that are available in the current market to date, the folks over at Marine Turbine Technologies feel that bigger is always better and their next project is a BEAST.After 17 years of success with their larger than life Y2K motorcycle that produces 320hp and goes up to 227mp/h (around 365km/h), they’re turning everything up to 11 with their upcoming MTT 420RR turbine-powered monstrosity.Using a Rolls Royce Allison – 250-C20 Series Gas Turbine Engine usually used for powering helicopters of the face of the Earth, MTT is tuning it to churn out a massive 420hp at 52,000rpm and 810Nm of head-decapitating torque as low as 2,000rpm.All that firepower is transferred down to the rear 17-inch carbon fibre Dymag wheel via a 2-speed automatic gearbox and a final chain drive. Together with its aluminium alloy frame and a fuel tank capacity of 34 litres of diesel and kerosene, the MTT 420RR sits roughly at around 226kg which is roughly around the average weight of a cruiser.Of course, just talking about it won’t probably make much sense considering how crazy it sounds right about now. That’s why MTT has released a short snippet to turn all the doubters into believers. Check out the soundtrack in the video below! To add a bit of class into the mix, the new 420RR will come with a colour dash monitor and control screen make sure that all the information regarding the helicopter engine sitting right in between the rider’s legs are functioning as it should. All in all, we’re confident that once this baby is up for sale, it will be the most powerful and fastest road-going motorcycle to world has ever seen. All we can do now is wait or if you’re interested to know the complete specs of the MTT 420RR, CLICK HERE.Source: Marine Turbine Technologies–Ads–last_img read more

UEFA Nations League Draws: England To Battle Belgium Baring Coronavirus Spread

first_imgEngland has been drawn to face Belgium, Denmark and Iceland in the UEFA Nations League after the draws were conducted on Tuesday. The Three Lions faced Roberto Martinez’s Belgium side twice at the 2018 World Cup, once at the end of the group phase and again in the third-place play-off, losing on both occasions. They are due to face the Danes in a friendly later this month – coronavirus permitting – while they famously lost to Iceland in Nice at Euro 2016.Wales and the Republic of Ireland will meet again after they were drawn in the same group. The other sides in Group B4 are first-time Euro finalists Finland and Bulgaria.Scotland, who are due to take on Israel in a Euro 2020 qualification play-off later this month, will also face them in the 2020-21 Nations League. Steve Clarke’s men will also face the Czech Republic and Slovakia in Group B2.Northern Ireland were drawn in Group B1 alongside Austria, Norway and Romania. The group matches will be played between September and November this year.UEFA Nations League FormatThere are 55 member states in UEFA, following Kosovo’s membership being accepted in 2016.The UEFA Nations League splits these nations into four leagues: A, B, C and D. For the original format, these divisions contained countries based on their coefficient score – so the best teams in Group A, right down to the lowest-ranked in Group D.Within each league, there are four smaller groups of three or four teams; so League A has smaller groups, A1, A2, A3 and A4, for example. The winner of each of League A’s groups goes on to play knockout fixtures to determine the UEFA Nations League champion. Below that, however, relegation and promotion come into play. The bottom-placed team in each group gets relegated to the league below, whilst the top-placed team gets promoted to the league above.Due to the UEFA Nations League expanding its groups for this edition though, no one was relegated last time around. The teams that were promoted do, however, get to jump up a league.LEAGUE AGroup A1: Netherlands, Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina, PolandGroup A2: England, Belgium, Denmark, IcelandGroup A3: Portugal (holders), France, Sweden, CroatiaGroup A4: Switzerland, Spain, Ukraine, GermanyLEAGUE BGroup B1: Austria, Norway, Northern Ireland, RomaniaGroup B2: Czech Republic, Scotland, Slovakia, IsraelGroup B3: Russia, Serbia, Turkey, HungaryGroup B4: Wales, Finland, Republic of Ireland, BulgariaLEAGUE CGroup C1: Montenegro, Cyprus, Luxembourg, AzerbaijanGroup C2: Georgia, North Macedonia, Estonia, ArmeniaGroup C3: Greece, Kosovo, Slovenia, MoldovaGroup C4: Albania, Belarus, Lithuania, KazakhstanLEAGUE DGroup D1: Faroe Islands, Latvia, Andorra, MaltaGroup D2: Gibraltar, Liechtenstein, San Marino2020 UEFA Nations League ScheduleMatchday 1: 3–5 September 2020Matchday 2: 6–8 September 2020Matchday 3: 8–10 October 2020Matchday 4: 11–13 October 2020Matchday 5: 12–14 November 2020Matchday 6: 15–17 November 2020Finals: 2/3 & 6 June 2021 (venue tbc)Relegation play-offs: 24/25 & 28/29 March 2022RelatedEuro 2020: Portugal Drawn With France And Germany In Group of DeathNovember 30, 2019In “Europe”World Champions Germany Handed Tough UEFA National League FixturesJanuary 24, 2018In “Europe”Europa League: PL Giants Arsenal, Chelsea Handed Tricky Group Stage FixturesAugust 31, 2018In “England”last_img read more
