He refused to pull over and led police on a slow-speed chase, said Palos Verdes Estates police Sgt. Patrick Strahn. After a few minutes, the man turned into the parking lot of a viewpoint in the 1300 block of Paseo del Mar. The man, who was alone in the car, stopped at a raised curb before driving over it, Strahn said. He also drove over a rock before stopping at the edge of the cliff. He hesitated a few seconds and then accelerated over the side, Strahn said. The man’s body was thrown from the car and landed on the beach. He had no identification with him and authorities had not determined his name by Saturday afternoon. Police believe he may have been intoxicated, Strahn said. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:45 p.m. and his body was airlifted by Los Angeles County Fire Rescue crews more than an hour later, authorities said. The car was towed up the cliff Saturday afternoon. [email protected] local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations!
